West
Southern Pacific published the first issue of West with a March, 1940 date on it and the subhead, “the magazine of western travel.” For a magazine, it was short — each issue is just four pages — but pages were 10-1/2″x14″, the same size as Life magazine, which was no doubt the inspiration for West. SP sent these to travel agents on a monthly or bi-monthly basis; not all are dated so it is difficult to be sure. Although there was an issue in 1944 commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Last Spike, publication otherwise seems to have ended in 1943 due to the war.
Each issue focused on a destination reachable by SP, often prompted by the inauguration of a new train. So far I’ve found 28 issues, three of which (including the inaugural issue) I have yet to collect. PDFs range from 4 to 7 megabytes in size.
