California’s Riviera

This issue of West features California’s coast between San Francisco and San Diego. Special emphasis is given to Monterey, with its “five superb golf courses,” and Santa Barbara. Monterey has at least 20 golf courses today, some of which are so “superb” that a single round costs $495. Inconsistently, this issue has a cover date, as did the June, 1940 issue, but not some of the issues in between.

The back cover has a beautiful photo of the Coast Daylight on the Pacific Ocean (with what appears to be a golf course in the background) and smaller photos of Los Angeles and San Diego. Is it my imagination or is the paint on the Daylight passenger cars already somewhat faded?
