California for the Tourist

Published in 1925, this booklet highlights all of California’s major attractions reached by SP: San Francisco before the Golden Gate Bridge; Monterey; Los Angeles; Carriso Gorge; San Diego; and Yosemite. The black-and-white photos are somewhat muddy but are large enough to make the state appear as attractive as it is in real life.

This is one of those booklets whose main cover, shown above, is actually the back cover. The front cover shows a painting of a foursome golfing overlooking San Francisco Bay. When I found this same golf course on an early California Zephyr ad, I thought it was imaginary. But this booklet identifies it as the Lincoln Park Golf Course, which still offers beautiful views of the Golden Gate.
