Santa Fe 1986 Calendar

Painters were attracted to New Mexico by the purity of the colors: red rocks, blue skies, green trees. That shows here in this painting, along with the red of chilis hanging out to dry. The painting for this calendar — which, for some reason, does not have December, 1985 on the pad — was done by Sheldon Orrin Parsons.

Parsons was born in Rochester, New York in 1866 and was a portrait painter until about 1912. He was then diagnosed with tuberculosis and, for his health, moved to New Mexico where he fell in love with the region and switched from portraits to landscapes. This particular painting was done in the northern New Mexico town of Jacona. Despite his disease, he lived until 1943.
