Union Pacific inaugurated the Challenger to Los Angeles in 1936. In 1937, UP and SP began a similar train to San Francisco that became known as (though this brochure doesn’t say so) the San Francisco Challenger. The brochure is undated, but contains a few clues. When it began operating, the train departed Chicago at 10:22 pm, but this was moved to 10:30 pm in 1938. This brochure shows the train leaving at 10:30, so it is from that year or later. The brochure has a line saying, “The Direct Route to the San Francisco World’s Fair,” which suggests the brochure was from 1939 or 1940.

In an effort to show how economical the train was, the brochure says the Chicago-San Francisco one-way fare was $39.50. That’s about $800 in today’s money, which is far more than airfare today is likely to cost. Seven meals were $2.05 (if travelers were willing to by the least-expensive ones on the menu), or about $41 in today’s dollars, which is more reasonable.
