In 1939, the San Francisco Bay Area celebrated the completion of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges with the Golden Gate Exposition. Yesterday’s booklet mentioned this on page 7 with a photo of an undeveloped Treasure Island (where the fair would take place) and a black-and-white illustration of the fair itself.

Many of the pages of the 1939 booklet were revised to entice people to the fair. Page 1 encourages people to see twice as much on their way to and from the fair. Pages 3 and 4 have photos of some of the fair’s massive buildings and one of a fully developed Treasure Island. Beyond this, many of the photos are the same, though not necessarily in the same locations or same croppings.
Page 20 of the 1938 booklet has the City of San Francisco crossing the Great Salt Lake with no hint of railroad logos on the nose of the locomotive. Page 20 of the 1939 edition has the same train at a different angle with the logos clearly visible (a colorized version of the photo is on this postcard). Did the SP airbrush the logos out of the photos in which they aren’t shown or was the locomotive originally delivered without them?
