West Visits the Redwood Empire

This issue of West encourages people to take the “Redwood Empire Tour” via SP subsidiary Northwestern Pacific overnight from San Francisco to Eureka, then Pacific Greyhound (which was partly owned by SP) from Eureka through the redwoods to Grants Pass, where they could catch a Southern Pacific train either to the north or back to the San Francisco Bay Area. The issue is dated April 1, 1942, which apparently was too soon after Pearl Harbor for SP to acknowledge the war.

Gaillardia and Cattails Dinner Menu

We’ve previously seen a dinner menu that featured a painting of coneflowers and daisies on the front, with a smaller painting of gaillardia and cattails on the back. This menu has the same two paintings in reverse. These paintings, as I’ve previously noted, were by an artist named Kathryn Fligg and the originals were displayed in the Denver Zephyr‘s bedrooms and compartments.

This appears to complete my set of Denver Zephyr dinner menus from the 1960s, which displayed eight different Fligg paintings on the front covers, with smaller ones selected from the same eight, on the backs. The paintings were: Continue reading

East on the North Coast Limited

We’ve previously seen Northern Pacific’s 8-1/2″x11″ brochures for the North Dakota badlands, Yellowstone, dude ranches, the Mount Baker National Forest, Portland, Seattle, Tacoma, rivers, the Rockies, and mountains in general. This one covers the East, as in the eastern United States.

At least, that’s what it says on the cover. Other than the cover photos and a page describing why people should take the North Coast Limited to the 1939 New York World’s Fair, this eight-panel brochure doesn’t actually say or show anything about the East. Instead, two panels give the schedule of the North Coast Limited and three-and-a-half more describe the comforts and services on board the train. That leaves half a page for Yellowstone Park, which — last time I looked at a map — isn’t in an eastern state. That’s fine, though, as the pages on the North Coast Limited probably tell more about the heavyweight version of that train that most other brochures and history books.

Swiftcurrent Falls in Glorious Glacier Park

Swiftcurrent Falls are far from the most spectacular falls in the world, but they are frequently photographed as they are right next to the road to the Many Glacier Hotel. The lake shown in most photos of the hotel is called Swiftcurrent Lake and its outflow forms the falls.

Lake Louise Alaska Dinner Menu

At first glance, this undated menu appears to have a lot in common with yesterday’s: a cover featuring a Canadian Pacific Rocky Mountain resort with an undated dinner menu on an unnamed Alaska steamship inside. I dated yesterday’s menu to the early 1930s solely on the statement that Canadian Pacific had 17 hotels when the menu was issued.

Like yesterday’s, this one has a muddy black-and-white photo of a steamship on the menu page, only the steamship has a single funnel instead of three, which means it is probably the Princess Alice, Princess Mary, or Princess Adelaide. At least one of these ships remained in Canadian Pacific service until 1954. Continue reading

A Mysterious Menu

This menu, which was used on a steamship to Alaska, offers a few mysteries. First, when was it issued? Second, who was Mark Triton (or Tritun), which seems to be the signature on the cover painting? And third, was this menu cover used on CP dining cars or hotels such as the Banff Springs Hotel?

Page 3 of the menu has a small photo of the Princess Charlotte, which was built for Canadian Pacific in 1908 and continued to serve the railway until being sold in 1949. That narrows the date down a little but not much. Continue reading

Gala Dinner Aboard the Prince George

The front cover of this menu shows a bunch of seniors looking pretty serious about eating all of the food that has been placed in front of them. None of them look particularly happy to be on board the Prince George, but maybe they are just worried that the servers will take the food away before they have had a chance to try everything on the menu. The back cover has a big white circle as if the CN restaurant department didn’t have the time or imagination to find a second photo to use on this menu.

Puppy Love at First Sight

The back cover of this menu has a caption for the front-cover photo vaguely saying “a northern stream comes home to rest in the clear, green Inside Passage.” The back cover also has a photo of two children and a dog with the caption, “It’s puppy love at first sight for a dog and a small Indian girl.” However, the caption writer seemed to be imagining things as the dog and girl weren’t even looking at each other.

Like older dinner menus we’ve seen for the Alaska-bound Prince George, this one has a “programme of music” on page 2 and an unpriced dinner menu on page 3. Dinner entrées include Welsh rarebit, Hungarian goulash, prime rib, pork chops, and stuffed capon. These were part of what appears to be a five- or six- or possibly even seven-course dinner offered on August 30, 1964.

The Red Dog Saloon

In 1964, the Red Dog Saloon greeted tourists getting off of cruise ships in Juneau, just as it does today and had done for several decades before. In fact, it has been recognized as the “oldest, man-made tourist attraction in Alaska.” The saloon offered (and offers) a family-friendly atmosphere featuring local musical talent.
