SP July 1943 Peninsula Timetable

As far as I can tell, San Francisco was the only major city west of Chicago to be served by commuter trains — passenger trains serving mainly commuters that operated on the same tracks as freight trains — before 1980. This timetable shows that Southern Pacific offered 27 trains each way per weekday trains from San Francisco to San Jose, with different schedules on weekends.

Scenic Wonders of the West

Southern Pacific issued several portfolios like this one with names like Scenic Grandeur of the West and Scenic California. Each contained 16 color or colorized photos “suitable for framing.” The ones we’ve previously seen that are dated 1943 say they were printed by “National Color Press.”

This one has a slightly different title and says it was printed in 1942 by “The Printing Company” in San Francisco and sold for 75¢ (the price tag is hidden by a tiny flap on page 3 of the folio cover). All of the photos, however, can be found in one or more of the folios printed by National Color Press. Ten of the sixteen were in Scenic Grandeur of the West while the remaining six were in Scenic California. Six were also in the 1948 Scenic Views Along the Shasta Route. Some might have been in some of the other portfolios but I haven’t checked them all. Continue reading

Southern Pacific December 1941 Timetable

Like the July timetable shown here a couple of days ago, this one is 24 pages long. The main difference between the two is that this one shows the schedule of the Arizona Limited, which was then in its second (and final) year of operation.

The Arizona Limited operated every other day between Chicago and Phoenix from December 15 through March 31. I previously said the train was a failure, but the truth was that wartime restrictions prohibited seasonal trains, so it wasn’t resumed in 1942. Immediately after the war, SP probably didn’t have the surplus equipment to operate the train, and by the time it did passenger demand was rapidly dropping. So it may have been a success when it was running.

Summer Spends the Winter in Southern Arizona

This issue of West is the second to advertise southern Arizona as a winter destination. The first one was undated but was from late 1940; I guessed December. This one is marked September, 1941, so I now suspect the first one was probably from around September as well.

Due to World War II, the train was cancelled after its second season. Continue reading

Southern Pacific July 1941 Timetable

This timetable has just 24 pages. The back cover (shown below) doesn’t say so, but the front cover says, in tiny print, “Condensed Through Schedules.” There are no full-page ads, timetables are abbreviated, and the station index is reduced from three pages to one. Like the full timetables, the cover shown below is actually the back cover.

The printer marks say 40,000 copies of this timetable were printed, while the print runs for the full system timetables were 100,000 to 110,000. SP printed new timetables every two to three months. It’s hard to imagine today that passenger trains were once so heavily used that the railroad needed to print between a half million and a million timetables per year.

Five More Streamliners!

“Five More!” brags the cover of this issue of West, referring to five new streamlined trains being put into service by Southern Pacific. Two of these were for the overnight Lark, two were the San Joaquin Daylights, and the fifth was a second edition of the City of San Francisco. This issue isn’t dated, but the streamlined Lark was put into service on March 2, 1941; the San Joaquin Daylights on July 2, 1941; and the second City of San Francisco on July 26, 1941.

Inside are ten photos of the interiors of these trains. The triple-unit lounge-diner for the Lark had not yet been delivered, however, so these were illustrated by paintings. Those cars were first photographed by SP photographers in July, 1941, so this issue must pre-date that month. Continue reading

Southern Pacific August 1940 Timetable

The front cover of this timetable advertises a new train and a renewed train. The new train was the Beaver, which was also introduced with the June 1940 issue of Southern Pacific’s West periodical. The Beaver was SP’s budget train on the Portland-Oakland route. Using mostly heavyweight equipment, it stopped running in 1949 when the fully streamlined Shasta Daylight entered service on that route.

The renewed train was the Treasure Island Special, which joined the City of San Francisco and Forty-Niner in five-day-a-month service. Inaugurated in June, 1939, to meet demand generated by the Golden Gate Exposition, the Treasure Island Special used heavyweight equipment in its first year, but (as advertised in this timetable) was upgraded to mostly streamlined equipment in 1940. The schedule was speeded up by only about an hour, probably because the train was still powered by steam. Beginning in December, 1940, the lightweight equipment that had served the summer-only Treasure Island Special was applied to the winter-only Arizona Limited.

I’ve Been to Mexico

Southern Pacific commissioned a San Francisco writer named H.K. Reynolds to spend three weeks traveling in Mexico and report on his journey. Due to the language barrier, most Americans considered Mexico a somewhat mysterious place. SP hoped to break down that barrier by distributing massive quantities of this booklet: this is the seventh edition, which printed 50,000 copies, and at least one more edition was printed before the war. This suggests at least 400,000 were distributed in all.

After describing the Southern Pacific train called El Costeño, meaning the Coaster, he glowingly reports on Mexico City, various Aztec ruins, a bull fight, and how to negotiate with sales people in Mexican markets. In all, his report and photos fill almost half of the booklet. Continue reading

Southern Pacific August 1938 Timetable

For the full-page advertisement on the front cover of this timetable, Southern Pacific hired a 23-year-old artist named Norman Todhunter, whose father, Francis Todhunter, was also a commercial artist. Norman later became known as a postage stamp designer who encouraged the Postal Service to print stamps with more than one color.

For this ad, SP asked Todhunter to draw some passengers on the Californian and/or the San Francisco Challenger. The drawings are somewhat contrived: one shows a man reading a book with the caption, “This gentleman was enthusiastic about the comfort of his tourist berth.” It could just as well read, “This man was sitting up at night because he wasn’t able to fall asleep on a rocking train.”

Southern Pacific September 1937 Timetable

The Depression was ending, finally, and Southern Pacific and its partner railroads were increasing their passenger service. This timetable advertises the San Francisco Challenger, an economy train inspired by the success of Union Pacific’s Challenger to Los Angeles. This timetable notes that Southern Pacific’s entry into the economy-fare Chicago-Los Angeles route was the Californian, but that train couldn’t compete with the faster El Capitan and Challenger.

The introduction of the San Francisco Challenger increased service on the Chicago-San Francisco route from three named trains in 1936 to five named trains in 1937. One of the 1936 and two of the 1937 trains operated only five times a month: the City of San Francisco and Forty-Niner. With steam power and heavyweight equipment, the Forty-Nine took longer than the streamliner: 49 hours, which is probably part of the reason for the name. Continue reading
