SP Shasta Route January 1954 Timetable

Like yesterday’s Coast/San Joaquin timetable, this one is dated January 1954, shows just one route, is eight pages long, and has the same cover showing outdated locomotives. Unlike yesterday’s, this one doesn’t devote two whole pages to a system map, instead including just a west coast map on half a page.

SP Coast/San Joaquin January 1954 Timetable

A week ago, we saw a 1949 timetable for SP’s Coast Line and San Joaquin routes that was the equivalent of six pages long. This one is eight pages, the difference being a system map in the center. It seems strange that, when the railroad was cutting corners on its system timetable, it added two pages to this one just to include a map that was mostly irrelevant to the timetable itself.

Southern Pacific April 1952 Timetable

After shrinking its system timetable from 56 to 52 pages in 1949, Southern Pacific shrank it again to 48 pages in 1952. One reason was that SP sold its West Coast of Mexico route to the Mexican government; it courteously included a timetable for the route but it took much less space than before, saving a page. Pages showing local trains in California, Texas, and elsewhere were also deleted.

The other big changes are to the cover. The back cover (shown above) changed from a romantic view of the Coast Daylight in palm trees to the above images of SP’s newest streamlined trains. The paper, however, has been downgraded; where in 1951 it was better quality than the newsprint used for the inside pages and printed with two colors, in this 1952 timetable it was the same pulpy newsprint printed only with black ink.

Southern Pacific September 1951 Timetable

The front cover of this timetable heralds an award given to Southern Pacific for having progressive passenger service in 1950. The award was given out by the Federation for Railway Progress, one of the efforts by maverick financier Robert Young to revolutionize the rail industry. Young thought that the Association of American Railroads was a bunch of old fogies, so he started a rival organization.

The war cost him and some of his allies a lot of money and Young, who was probably manic-depressive, shot himself in January, 1958. Left without its main supporter, the Federation for Railway Progress shut down four months later. Continue reading

Southern Pacific 1950 Peninsula Fares

The Peninsula, of course, is the San Francisco peninsula, which includes San Mateo County. SP commuter trains continued south of the peninsula to San Jose and other communities in Santa Clara County. This flyer lists fares; the Streamliner Memories reader who scanned it didn’t send a scan of the back, so I presume it was blank.

Someone else has written that fares on peninsula commuter trains didn’t change from August 1920 to October 1946, a remarkable record considering those tumultuous years. This may have been due to the California Public Utilities Commission discouraging SP from increasing its in-state fares during that time. Continue reading

SP April 1950 Condensed Timetable

This is the 24-page condensed version of yesterday’s timetable. A careful examination reveals that many of the pages in yesterday’s timetable have been reprinted here almost verbatim; the only differences are the page numbers and the deletion of timetable numbers. Because yesterday’s had many more timetables, including the numbers would show the many missing schedules.

One strange thing is that both versions show the westbound Sunset Limited first, then eastbound. But for all other trains, the system timetable shows westbound first while the condensed shows eastbound first. It doesn’t really make any difference, but it would have made the timetables easier to use if they were consistent. Continue reading

Southern Pacific April 1950 Timetable

This November, people once again debated the change to and from Daylight Savings Time. In 1950, a number of states pushed the clocks back in the fall, but it was far from uniform. The front cover of this timetable reminds travelers that, no matter what state they are in, the railroads refused to observe Daylight Savings Time. “Where Daylight Savings Times is in effect,” it says, “travelers should remember that trains will operate one hour later by their watch than the times shown in this folder.” At least it wasn’t one hour earlier.

The front cover of this timetable advertises the Starlight, a “new, overnight ‘fun’ train between San Francisco and Los Angeles.” The all-coach train was fully streamlined, “just like the Daylights, only at night.” The train came equipped with a tavern-lounge car, an extra-fare parlor-observation car, and a coffee shop car that was open all night.

The train left Los Angeles and San Francisco 45 minutes before the all-Pullman Lark and arrived at the opposite end two hours and 15 minutes before the Lark. Coast/San Joaquin Routes July 1949 Timetable

Marked “for train distribution,” this folding timetable shows only the Coast and San Joaquin routes. That means it has three panels of coast route schedules (one of which was mostly bus connections), two panels of San Joaquin route schedules, and the cover panel (half of which is dedicated to a description of the various Daylights). The panels, however, are a little smaller than a regular timetable, being about 7-1/2″x8″ instead of 8″x9″.

Southern Pacific February 1949 Timetable

I noted yesterday that passenger train ridership was rapidly falling in the late 1940s, which may help explain why the number of pages in SP’s timetable shrank from 56 in 1948 to 52 in 1949. It doesn’t, however, explain why the print run for the timetable was increased from 110,000 in 1948 to 115,000 in this edition.
