The Perfect Vacationland

The title of this 1940 booklet is apt as Colorado is a wonderful place to vacation. The Rocky Mountains west of Denver seem endless, yet they are interrupted by broad valleys that the pioneers called “parks,” as in Estes Park, South Park, and Winter Park. These mountains and parks, along with more formal parks such as Rocky Mountain and Mesa Verde, are all described in this booklet. I was particularly intrigued by a mention of the Wheeler National Monument, which was downgraded to the Wheeler Geologic Area in 1950.

1937 Bargain Tours

The six bargain tours offered by Burlington Escorted Tours in 1936 must have been successful, as they slightly expanded the offerings in 1937. Five of the six tours offered in 1936 are included here: California-Grand Canyon; Grand Canyon-California-Pacific Northwest; Canadian Rockies-Pacific Northwest; Alaska; and Alaska-Canadian Rockies-Pacific Northwest. Missing is California-Pacific Northwest.

In addition, Burlington offered five shorter tours in 1937, four of them to Colorado and one to the Black Hills. Two of these took the Rio Grande through the Royal Gorge to Glenwood Springs and then back to Denver through the Moffat Tunnel. The other three tours went exclusively on Burlington trains. Northern Pacific Wagon Train Menu

This menu cover has been printed on very stiff paper to look and feel like a thinly sliced piece of redwood. Many people might not notice, but the effect is spoiled by the fact that the inside wood grain doesn’t come close to matching the grain on the outside. The wagon train scene on the cover is a separate piece of paper that was glued on, so it is possible that other images were also used with wood-grained covers.

Minnesota Railroad Map

This 1967 map of Minnesota was made mainly for shippers so they could see what communities were served by the Northern Pacific. The railway also courteously showed the lines of 17 other railroads, from Canadian National to Erie Mining Co. Railroad. Of course, Great Northern and CB&Q are also shown.

By 1963, when it issued this brochure, Northern Pacific had finally brought its flagship train up to the standard set by the Empire Builder by the addition of new diners and home-rebuilt Traveller’s Rest cars, both of which are pictured in this brochure. Photos also show interiors of domes, coaches, sleeping cars, and the observation lounge car.

This booklet is nearly identical to a 1954 edition posted here a few days ago. The big difference, other than the date on the back cover, is that some of the text and photographs are printed in blue rather than the usual black. The blue photos distinguish the booklet from its predecessors, but since they are all on the inside, it isn’t immediately obvious from the cover which book was the 1954 edition and which was from 1955.

The blue doesn’t change the fact that, at a time when many other railroads were printing advertising booklets in full cover, Northern Pacific was still using black and white. The first Northern Pacific booklet I have that makes full use of color, Your Northwest Adventure, is dated 1963. NP Summer 1954 Timetable

The back cover of this timetable announces that “new Vista-Domes are coming!” That’s certainly worth an exclamation point as the domes launched the North Coast Limited from a train distinctly inferior to the Empire Builder to one that had at least four advantages: two dome coaches and two dome sleepers.

This 52-page booklet is filled with black-and-white photos of the park as it appeared in 1939. The text includes a one-page essay by Emerson Hough that was also included in Northern Pacific’s 1954 booklet (and no doubt several others).

This 44-page booklet is too fancy for NP to have given it out to ordinary tourists, and doesn’t have a price so it probably wasn’t sold. Instead, it was probably given to travel agents to help them sell trips to Yellowstone on the Northern Pacific. The list of NP agents in the back combined with the large number of photos devoted to showing hotels in the park lends support to this idea as opposed to it being a booklet sold to tourists.

The booklet includes 28 nearly full-page photos (eight of which show hotels), six pages of pairs of half-page photos, three maps, and the covers (the insides of which are blank). The remaining pages are a title page (with a photo of the Roosevelt Arch), the list of agents, and a page with seven smaller photos of hotels (several of which are details of the full-page photos previously shown). This booklet is dated 1954, the year Northern Pacific introduced the Loewy color scheme for its passenger trains and dome cars for the North Coast Limited. But there’s no sign of either change in the booklet, which shows the Pine Tree paint scheme on the cover. Probably this booklet was designed in some previous year and was reprinted in 1954.
