Burlington-Northern Pacific Yellowstone

This booklet is dated 1954, the year Northern Pacific introduced the Loewy color scheme for its passenger trains and dome cars for the North Coast Limited. But there’s no sign of either change in the booklet, which shows the Pine Tree paint scheme on the cover. Probably this booklet was designed in some previous year and was reprinted in 1954.

Page 3 includes a “tribute” to Yellowstone by western author Emerson Hough, who died more than 30 years before this booklet was printed. Hough had visited Yellowstone in 1893 and started a campaign to save the park’s dwindling bison herds from poaching. Fortunately, his tribute was just as valid in 1954 (or, for that matter, 2018) as it was whenever he wrote it.
