Northern Pacific’s 1953 timetable advertises the “faster North Coast Limited.” This means it was faster than the old North Coast Limited, not faster than its competitors, the Empire Builder and Olympian Hiawatha. Although the train was mostly streamlined in 1948, it remained on a 59-hour schedule until 1952. According to Bill Kuebler, the author of a great book on the train, this is because the railroad needed to upgrade its physical plant after years of wartime traffic in order to support the faster speeds.

This timetable shows the North Coast Limited taking 46 hours to get from Chicago to Portland and 46-1/2 hours to get to Seattle. The streamlined Empire Builder was an hour faster to Portland and 90 minutes faster to Seattle, and the Olympian Hiawatha matched the Builder‘s time to Seattle. So, even after being speeded up, the “faster North Coast Limited” was still slower than its competition.
