How to See the Whole Pacific Coast in 1938

The first page of this booklet explains the Southern Pacific’s four-great-routes bargain: Instead of going to Los Angeles or San Francisco on one route and back on the same route, go to one, then take the train to the other, then back from the other on a different route for the same price. In other words, provided the traveler has the time, the trip between LA and San Francisco is thrown in at no extra cost.

How to See the Pacific Northwest

In keeping with its “four great routes” marketing theme, the Southern Pacific argued that the way to see the Northwest was to take one of its routes in one direction or another. SP only approached the Northwest from the south, so it couldn’t argue that people could take one SP route in and another out (other than taking the Siskiyou line one way and the Cascade line the other for a short part of the journey). But it could urge people to take the SP over some part of their trip.

In addition to describing destinations in the Northwest and Alaska, this booklet includes four pages of photos of train interiors without specifically saying that any of the photos were of a train on the Shasta Route. Unusually for SP booklets of the time, this one is undated. However, the City of San Francisco train shown on page 2 was in service only between June 1936 and January 1938. The streamlined Daylight shown on page 3 entered service in March 1937. Thus, the brochure must have been put together in 1937.

Four Great Routes to the East

Here is a 1931 version of Southern Pacific’s four-great-routes booklets but with a twist: instead of advertising four routes from the East to California, this one suggests four routes from California to the East. Inside, the usual descriptions of each of the routes — four pages for the Sunset Route and two pages each for the Overland, Golden State, and Shasta routes — needed only a little rewriting to make them apply to Californians rather than easterners.

The cover shown above (which is the back cover) is a Maurice Logan painting whose inset might show what in 1931 would have been the latest 4-8-4 locomotive, which Southern Pacific added to its roster in 1930. However, the wheels aren’t shown and it could be a 4-8-2, which dated back to 1923 and didn’t look a lot different from early SP 4-8-4s. Continue reading

Go by Train to San Francisco

This cover painting by Maurice Logan also appeared on a 16-page, 1928 booklet titled “California for the Tourist.” This brochure has the equivalent of four pages and is aimed at southern Californians thinking of traveling to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Naturally, the brochure subtly encourages travelers to see more of California by taking one route one way and the other route the other way. Continue reading

As previously noted here, the San Francisco Overland Limited was one of several Chicago-California trains that were completely re-equipped and put on 63- rather than 68-hour schedules in November, 1926. Issued just two months later, this brochure advertises this new train and its faster schedule.

In the late 1920s, SP and its partner railroads offered four daily trains between Chicago and San Francisco: the Overland, the Pacific Limited, the Gold Coast, and the San Francisco Limited. Though it was on the older, 68-hour schedule, the San Francisco Limited, like the Overland Limited, was an all-Pullman train. Passengers who wanted to save five hours were charged $10 (about $160 in today’s money) more to take the Overland. This booklet, which never mentions the other trains, was apparently designed to justify that extra fare. Continue reading

American Canyon Wayside Notes

Like the Shasta Route wayside notes presented here yesterday and the day before, these two booklets were issued just a couple of years apart in 1922 and 1924. Unlike the Shasta booklets, these two are nearly identical, other than the dates: same photos, same text, same covers (the covers shown below being the back covers). The main changes are that the type faces are slightly different and the map on page 15 of the 1924 edition is a little smaller to make room for a longer list of Southern Pacific ticket agents.

The Central Pacific (later Southern Pacific) followed the American River for about 80 miles from its source, near Emigrant Gap in the Sierra Nevada, to Sacramento. Much of the route was in the bottom of a steep, narrow canyon, which made it some of the most interesting scenery between Ogden and San Francisco. Continue reading

S.P. Shasta Route Wayside Notes for 1923

This booklet was issued just three years after the one presented yesterday, but there are enough differences between the two that I felt this one deserved its own day. Quite a few of the photos have been updated, and the typefaces have also been changed.

Most of the text remains the same, but some has been updated. For example, the 1920 booklet had one short paragraph about Southern Pacific’s Coos Bay branch, even though it had been completed in 1916. The 1923 edition adds two longer paragraphs and lists eight cities served by the route. It also mentions Bandon, today home of the famous Bandon Dunes golf courses, but in 1923 “a popular ocean resort twenty miles from Coquille” that wasn’t on the railroad but was “reached by river steamer.”

Wayside Notes Along Shasta Route

We’ve previously seen a 12-page booklet from 1950 describing sights along the Southern Pacific’s Shasta Route. This one is from three decades earlier and fills 16 pages. Unlike the later booklet, this one includes more than 80 photos which, though small, are crisp and detailed. Also like the later booklet, the main cover (as shown below) is the back cover, not the front, a format SP used for many of its timetables and booklets.

The booklet is dated November 24, 1920 and includes 1920 population data for the cities along the route. This reveals that the Census Bureau was a lot faster at publishing census data in the days before computers and electronic tabulations, as 2020 data for cities wasn’t available until early in 2021. Outing Resorts in California & Southern Oregon

This booklet aimed to help “all who are seeking suitable stopping places during their summer vacations” by briefly describing about 200 hotels, resorts, camps, and other destinations throughout California, including a few around Crater and Klamath lakes in Oregon. These are all in rural or small towns; major hotels in Los Angeles or San Francisco are skipped in favor of places such as hotels among the redwoods near Santa Cruz and lodges in the mountains near Lake Tahoe and Yosemite.

Most of these places are no longer in business, but it is always fun to search for what is left of them. The Rogue-Elk Inn, for example, is listed on page 16 as being on the highway from Medford to Crater Lake. According to Wikipedia, it opened in 1916 but faded after its founder died in the 1950s, eventually becoming a private residents. It was put up for sale for about $200,000 in 2016, and the realtor photos reveal a worn-out building that still has traces of elegance.
