1930s Streamliner Blotters

These four blotters from the Dale Hastin collection advertise streamliners in the late 1930s. PDFs are about 300 to 500 KB in size.

The M-10001, whose face is on this blotter, operated as the City of Portland from June, 1935 to June, 1939, so the blotter probably dates from around 1936 to 1938. Union Pacific’s 1937 timetable shows a different departure time for the Pacific Limited than is shown on this blotter, so it probably pre-dates that year.

Post-1932 Union Pacific Blotters

As noted yesterday, after 1932, Union Pacific dropped the word “system” from its logo, so these blotters date from 1933 or later. “The Overland Route” was removed from the logo in 1942, so these blotters from the Dale Hastin collection all date from before then. The Oregon-Washington Limited probably ended in about 1935, when the City of Portland joined the Portland Rose and Pacific Limited on the Chicago-Portland route. If so, this blotter dates to 1933 or 1934.

UP Blotters from Before 1933

Here are some more blotters from the Dale Hastin collection. With one exception, they are of indeterminate date, but most appear to be from before 1933. Click images to download PDFs, which are about 500 to 600 KB in size.

The beautiful colors in the illustrations of national parks on this blotter are somewhat muted by the background color; they would have been more dramatic on a white or other light background. I would guess this blotter is from the 1920s.

Missing Menus

In addition to a picture of menu with the Colorado capitol building on a postcard, I’ve seen the following nine Union Pacific color-photo menus on eBay. I suspect there are several more including menus showing one or two universities in Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and possibly (since we’ve seen two different universities from Kansas and Washington) additional universities in California, Nebraska, and Utah. Let me know if you have any of these or have seen any others.

1971 Analysts Dinner Menu

One more Union Pacific menu, this one dated October, 1971 (five months after Amtrak) and used on a tour for “financial analysts.” The cover is quite beautiful and I don’t believe I’ve seen that painting elsewhere; perhaps UP commissioned it before Amtrak but didn’t get a chance to use it after Amtrak took over.

What you can’t see from the image is that this is hardly a full-sized menu, being only slightly larger than 4″ by 5″. Similar to the 1967 City of Portland dinner menu from a few days ago, this City of Los Angeles menu once again has both table d’hôte and a la carte sides. The four table d’hôte meals are salmon, ham, chicken, and sirloin steak, while the other side has three more “dinner specialties”: chopped beef, club sandwich, and chef’s salad. The a la carte includes two sandwiches, two salads, one soup, and a lot of desserts and beverages.

Chef’s Salad Menu

By today’s standards, this chef’s salad would be pretty mundane, but Union Pacific must have been proud of it as the menu not only lists all the ingredients but includes a recipe for the salad dressing. As we’ve seen before, in 1969 Union Pacific departed from the wrap-around color photo menus in order to celebrate its centennial with Howard Fogg paintings. Here are two menus with the same cover, showing construction of a bridge across the Missouri River, that were used in the City of Los Angeles coffee shop car for lunch and dinner.

1968 Lake Marie Lunch Menu

We’ve already seen a 1958 menu with a photo of Lake Marie, but this is a different photograph, made a little more active by the waterfall in the foreground. The text to the left of the photos are almost, but not quite, identical (one pushes dude ranches, the other mentions the Saratoga Inn and Medicine Bow Lodge).
