1934 Summer Tours

This is the 1934 edition of Union Pacific/Chicago & North Western’s annual booklet of escorted tours. This one came with a small card glued to the front that read, “For 1935 vacation season, we will operate the same tours as are shown herein, also a few additional tours.” I’ve included this card as pages 2 and 3 of this booklet. I count eight distinct tours in the 1934 edition but twelve in the 1935, though many of the extra tours are only minor variations of some of the basic eight.

The cover of this edition is rather plain compared with the 1932 version, but at least as dignified as the 1927 edition. It is certainly not as salacious as the 1931 edition.

1931 Summer Tours

For 1931, Union Pacific elected to replace a color photo with this painting of horseback riders enjoying travel through what appears to be the Colorado mountains. This choice is questionable as I’m not sure I would send a teenage daughter on a trip to be leered at by crusty cowboys. (To be fair, a close look suggests that the male rider is looking at his hands, where he appears to be rolling a cigarette, but that’s not obvious at first glance.)

Both this booklet and yesterday’s 1930 edition include several “natural color photos” as opposed to the colored lithographs of black-and-white photos found in the 1920s booklets. Curiously, only two color photos are found in both the 1930 and 1931 editions: Zion’s Great White Throne and the Grand Canyon photo that was on the cover of the 1930 booklet. The two booklets each contain different images of Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Falls, as well as Bryce, Zion, Yosemite, and Rocky Mountain parks.

1930 Summer Tours

In 1930, UP replaced the embossed cover summer tours booklet with this booklet featuring an attractive photo of the Grand Canyon. The cover pictures would continue to change each year during the 1930s.

My copy of this booklet is missing the last interior page, which was a tear-out form for reserving space on one of the tours. Fortunately, a scanned edition of this booklet from Brigham Young University Library on archive.org has that page intact, so I included it in my version. If you are daunted by the 48.5-MB size of my PDF, you can download archive.org’s version, which is only 5.0 MB.

1927 Southern California Booklet

Embossed cover booklets for California, Colorado, the Pacific Northwest, Yellowstone, Southern Utah parks, and summer escorted tours all also appear in later incarnations with maps or color photos on the covers. But this embossed cover booklet for Southern California is the only one for that region. Considering that the 60-page California booklet has numerous photos of Southern California, several in color, this all black-and-white photo booklet seems redundant, which is probably why there are no later versions.

Northern Pacific purchased its first 4-8-4 locomotives, named Northerns after that railroad, the year before this booklet came out. But on the Union Pacific, 4-8-2 Mountain locomotives, one of which–number 7038–is pictured on page 29 of this booklet, would continue to be the premiere passenger power for another decade.

1925 Summer Tours

Although the curiously named Chicago, Union Pacific and North Western Line tour company had been offering escorted tours since 1901, this is one of the earliest Summer Tour guides that I’ve seen. The beautiful front cover shows Old Faithful while the equally striking back–which someone has turned into a poster–shows Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Inside, most of the guide is dedicated to a trip called “Two National Parks in Two Weeks.” With all meals, a lower berth on overnight trains, and stays at Yellowstone Park hotels (as opposed to camps), this tour cost $217, or about $3,000 in today’s money. The unfolding center map shows the two parks in some detail, with a smaller map of the UP/C&NW line to the parks but only some other UP/C&NW routes.

Colorado’s Mountain Playground in 1923

This appears to be in the same series as a 1921 booklet about California and a 1923 booklet about the Pacific Northwest. However, the PNW booklet is a different size (8×9 vs. 6×9) and has flimsy (but glossy) covers, while the California and Colorado booklets have stiffer (but not glossy) covers. The cover paintings are similar and, though I can’t find an artist’s name on any of the covers, it is possible that the same artist did the Colorado and Northwest covers. Inside, the numerous photos are all black-and-white or, actually, blue-and-white.

Page 30 features a photo of Union Pacific locomotive 7000, a 4-8-2 Mountain-type, pulling a passenger train across the prairie, presumably towards Colorado. This locomotive, which the UP called a Sports Model, was built in 1922 and represented the newest and most-powerful passenger locomotives on the UP roster at that time. The Mountain type got its name from the Allegheny Mountains, as it was pioneered by the Chesapeake and Ohio eleven years before UP bought the 7000, its first 4-8-2.

1915 Panama Expositions

In celebration of the opening of the Panama Canal, San Francisco and San Diego both decided to hold international expositions. San Francisco’s Panama-Pacific Exposition lasted almost ten months, while San Diego’s Panama-California Exposition was open the entire year. The Palace of Fine Arts is the main surviving building from the San Francisco fair, while several buildings from the San Diego fair remain in Balboa Park.

This booklet describes both fairs, but gives most attention to the San Francisco expo, where Union Pacific had an unforgettable exhibit advertising Yellowstone National Park. Covering four acres and built at a cost of half a million dollars (about $10 million in today’s money), the exhibit took visitors through a canyon to a 230-foot-diameter relief map of Yellowstone, a model of Old Faithful Geyser that erupted every 65 minutes, an 80-foot high Yellowstone Falls over which flowed 10,000 gallons of water per minute, and a full-size replica of Old Faithful Inn that housed a restaurant for 2,000 people entertained by an 80-piece orchestra. Pathway to the Setting Sun

Like the Milwaukee Road’s Lake Michigan to Puget Sound, this booklet was published by a third-party–Tom Jones of Cincinnati–for distribution by Barkalow Brothers News Service of Omaha “especially for the patrons of the” Union Pacific System, including the Oregon Short Line and Oregon-Washington Railway and Navigation Company. This particular copy was published in 1914 and is labeled the sixth edition.

The booklet presents more than 100 black-and-white photographs of the route between Omaha and Portland, that being Union Pacific’s only route to the Pacific Coast until 1921 when it took over the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad. Photos include sights seen from the tracks as well as those some distance away such as Yellowstone Park.

Where Gush the Geysers

This is a beautiful 40-page booklet (44 with covers), especially considering it is more than 100 years old. It contains 20 color lithographs, two of which are maps and the rest photos. I confess I may have increased the saturation slightly when converting it to a PDF. archive.com has some versions of this booklet on line, but they are not as well reproduced–some, for example, are in black-and-white.

Curiously, the cover page is titled, “Where Gush the Geysers,” while the title page is called “To Geyserland.” The booklet came out in several editions over the years, and I suspect they changed the name on the cover to get repeat sales.

More Union Pacific Blotters

The presence of the Overland logo on the first two blotters here date them from 1942 or before. The other three blotters are probably from after World War II. All are from the Dale Hastin collection and the PDFs are about 200 to 300 KB in size.

Union Pacific evidently did a series of blotters tying itself to major state universities in the states it served. The Overland legend is clearly visible behind the UofI I.
