This 1928 booklet has paintings by Maurice Logan on both the front and back covers. However, this is one of those curious railroad booklets in which what should be the front cover (shown immediately below) is on the back. Logan’s Redwood painting (shown at the end of this post) is on the front, yet is accompanied by a caption, not a headline like the other cover.

The booklet also has a full-color centerfold cartoon-style map of the state by California artist Lewis Rothe. Born in Massachusetts in 1875, Rothe moved to San Francisco in 1903 and lived in the Bay Area or San Diego until his death in 1951. Continue reading →

Dude Ranches Out West

Union Pacific’s 1947 dude ranches guide listed 108 ranches in 36 pages; the 1955 guide listed 138 ranches in 60 pages. This guide, from 1959, lists 143 ranches in 68 pages.

I’ve been fortunate enough to stay at a few of these ranches, including Elkhorn and Lone Mountain ranches in Montana; Redfish Lake Lodge in Idaho; Redstone Inn in Colorado; and Triangle-X Ranch in Wyoming, among others. They are probably a bit more luxurious today than in the 1950s, and the menus have no doubt kept up with the times, but physically they haven’t changed a great deal. Lone Mountain is a personal favorite as it has become a great cross-country ski lodges in winter, which wasn’t true in the 1950s.

This 1959 brochure is a companion to a City of Los Angeles brochure published in the same year. The railroad still published full, 48-page along-the-way booklets for the entire system, but apparently hoped it could save money by giving some passengers these brochures that were effectively just six pages long.

1956 Southern Utah Parks Booklet

This is an updated version of a 1950 booklet. The two booklets have many of the same photos and much the same text. In addition to having a different cover, the newer edition has five new color photos of scenery, and all of the black-and-white photos of Union Pacific train interiors have been replaced by color photos of domeliner interiors.

This 1955 brochure describes the post-war City of Denver, which featured a dining car decorated with cities-to-plains murals, an Old English pub served by red-jacketed waiters, and a blunt-end observation lounge car. The brochure is decorated with color photos and colorful graphics by the Willmarth studio.

Unlike the others in that series, this one does not show Berkeley’s administration building but Sather Tower, also known as the campanile, the campus bell & clock tower.
