1929 Portfolio of Blackfoot Indian Portraits

My notes say this portfolio, which is from the Spokane Public Library Northwest Collection, was published in 1929, which is probably based on the tattered envelope the portfolio came in. The railway gave much greater care to this portfolio, which includes eight paintings by Winold Reiss and four by Langdon Kihn, than to Kihn’s solo portfolio, not only printing in color but mounting the paintings on gold paper that was then mounted on a black background as opposed to the nondescript grey background of the Kihn portfolio.

This painting by Winold Reiss truly humanizes its subject. Compare with the Langdon Kihn paintings on pages 13 and 15 of the portfolio, which look more like paintings of a costume with part of a face glued on top. Click image to download a 9.9-MB PDF of 12 prints.

While Louis Hill may have learned about Langdon Kihn’s paintings as early as 1921, he wasn’t introduced to Winold Reiss until 1925, when Reiss’ brother wrote Hill asking the tycoon to sponsor a second trip to Glacier, where Reiss could complete more Indian portraits. Hill not only agreed to support a 1927 trip, he purchased 51 paintings that Reiss completed that season. Reiss visited Glacier for many years after that, and Hill continued to purchase most of his Blackfoot paintings.

Langdon Kihn Portfolio of Pikuni Indians

Long before the Great Northern published its famous 1940 and 1958 portfolios of Winold Reiss paintings of Blackfoot Indians, it published this portfolio (which I scanned from the Spokane Public Library Northwest Collection) of Pikuni (Blackfoot) Indians by W. Langdon Kihn. Kihn’s paintings are not as compelling as Reiss’. For example, the portrait below looks like Kihn took a photograph of his subject’s face and then painted a costume around it, giving it a cartoonish-look. Reiss’ paintings also often “flattened” the clothing around the subject’s face and hands, but in a much more believable way.

Kihn was, in fact, Reiss’ student; so why did the Great Northern print a portfolio of Kihn paintings before it did Reiss’? It may be that Reiss’ superiority worked against him in this case. The two of them, master and student, first visited the Blackfoot Indian Reservation together in the winter of 1920. Reiss painted 36 portraits; they went on exhibition in New York and were immediately purchased by Montana art collector Philip Cole, who also had many Charles Russell paintings.

Straight East on the New Oriental Limited

This booklet has no date, but since it advertises the “new” Oriental Limited, it is from 1924 or later; and since it does not mention the historical monuments that Great Northern built in 1925, it is from 1925 or earlier. I’m inclined to think 1924, as the booklet contains several interior photos of the Oriental Limited, but no exterior photos of the train in service. Wait–what about the cover photo? Actually, that photo is replicated on page 14 sans train, indicating that the observation platform on the cover was “photoshopped” (literally cut-and-pasted) in by GN marketing staff.

I was able to scan the booklet from the Northwest Collection of the Spokane Public Library.

Sky-Wide and Handsome

In 1954 and 1955, Southern Pacific converted seven lounge and observation cars into three-quarter length dome cars. At one end of these cars, a lower-level lounge was overtopped by a high, domed ceiling, producing an expansive atmosphere accurately conveyed by this brochure.

The brochure plays on the phrase “high, wide and handsome,” “meaning, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), ‘In a carefree manner, in good style’ or, according to the Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE), ‘Grandiloquent, stylish, successful.'” This “bone fide American phrase” can be traced back to the late nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, it was the title of a 1937 musical and a 2009 song, but perhaps has been most identified with the American West, especially Montana. In any case, it appropriately describes SP’s dome cars.

Your Shasta Daylight Trip

This 1951 brochure unfolds to be 32 inches long and provides a station-by-station description of the trip from Portland to Oakland and San Francisco. At the time the brochure was made, passengers still rode a Southern Pacific ferry from Oakland to San Francisco, “passing under the huge San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, longest in the world,” which would soon put the ferries out of business.

Compared with the Shasta Route’s 12-page 1950 along-the-way booklet, this one is flimsy and filled with print that is hard to read both because it is small and because of the poor contrast between the light green ink and white paper. It is possible that SP continued to publish the larger booklet for first-class passengers while this brochure was given to coach passengers.

See Twice as Much in 1946

Here’s another in a series of Southern Pacific advertisements for the fact that it offered multiple routes into California. Some 24 of the 36 pages in this booklet are identical to those in a similar booklet that dated from before the war.

The differences are mainly in the first and last few pages. The inside front covers present a glorious display of trains in Daylight, Armour yellow, and two-tone grey colors. One interior page that is different is page 24, which shows an aerial view of completed Shasta Dam, which was only under construction at the time the pre-war booklet was published. Continue reading

The Sunset Route being longer than either the Shasta or Coast routes, this advertisement has twice as many pages. There are no photos or illustrations of passenger trains in the entire booklet, but several photos of New Orleans, cities in Texas, Arizona resorts, and California.

As your train passes through Louisiana, “Small Negro children dance with glee and wave to your train from tiny cabins,” the booklet reports obliviously. At the other end of the route the booklet shows a yellow-sky (pollution?) photo of Westlake Park, whose name had been changed to MacArthur Park four years previous. Perhaps the SP didn’t agree with this name change, which was supposedly suggested by William Randolph Hearst who wanted General MacArthur to run for president.

Your Southbound Shasta Route Trip

Here’s a companion to yesterday’s brochure covering the route between the Pacific Northwest and the San Francisco Bay Area. It actually starts in Vancouver, BC, meaning trains of the Great Northern to Seattle and Great Northern, Northern Pacific, or Union Pacific from Seattle to Portland. From Portland to Oakland the Shasta Route uses the Southern Pacific, but this 1946 brochure doesn’t mention any specific trains.

It does have a photo of a heavyweight, Pullman-green, air-conditioned train next to Odell Lake in the Oregon Cascade Mountains. The latter was the classier train, as it had a full observation-lounge car while the Klamath just had a small lounge in a Pullman observation sleeper.

Your Northbound California Trip

This 1946 brochure purports to show the northbound trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco, but is really an advertisement for the route than an along-the-way brochure for on-board passengers. The front cover shows a Daylight locomotive pulling 19 cars–the standard consist in 1946–along the California coast.

It seems surprising that these portfolios were published in the midst of the war, as anything as frivolous as traveling for pleasure or catering to such travelers was frowned upon by the federal government. Yet several of these folios are dated either 1943 or 1944.
