Picturesque Quebec

“French Canada,” says this 1948 booklet, is “where old and new worlds meet,” apparently because it was settled before British Canada and clung to its traditions after being taken over by the British. This theme is similar to the one in a 1940 Canadian National booklet about Quebec.

Although the cover illustration is quite colorful, CN was content to use black-and-white photos in the rest of the booklet, including the back cover. Most pages and a few photos are highlighted with pale blue and yellow tints. This literally pales in comparison to rival Canadian Pacific’s advertising: CP had thoroughly embraced the color photo revolution by 1948, as illustrated by this booklet.
