Old Faithful Moderne Menu

Like other menus in the Moderne series, this one takes its front and back cover photos from an Art Nouveau series menu. Both photos are by Haynes, which probably refers to F. Jay Haynes rather than his son Jack Haynes. The photos have been so heavily colorized that there is no sign of the black-and-white images that underlie them; the back one might as well be a painting.

This menu is for dinner in the café car. The left side squeezes in both table d’hôte and a la carte while the right side is for beverages. The same halibut steak dinner that was on yesterday’s lunch menu for 90 cents is also on this menu for the same price. This menu does not have a date code on the inside but I’ve dated it 1936 because it came with, and was probably collected on the same trip as, yesterday’s menu.

This is the eleventh Art Nouveau menu I’ve found that has been converted into a Moderne-style menu. Of the 17 Art Nouveau menus I’ve identified, four would not have been used for Moderne menus as they were essentially duplicates of later menus using a different photographic process. That leaves two other possibilities for Moderne menus: Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain Park and the Grand Canyon showing part of the lodge.
