Jasper Park Lodge in 1934

This booklet is beautifully decorated with four full-color paintings by Charles Walter Simpson, whose work we have seen before for both Canadian Pacific and Canadian National. The cover painting (which is on the back cover) was obviously commissioned by the railway as it prominently shows Jasper Park Lodge and surrounding bungalow cabins.

I suspect that Canada’s community of fine artists much appreciated Canadian National and Canadian Pacific’s patronage of their work while it lasted. Four-color printing became feasible in the mid-1920s and gorgeous landscapes appeared in booklets and brochures issued by both railroads. While the above cover painting verges on commercial illustration rather than fine art, most of the paintings used in CN and CP booklets were truly fine artworks. Unfortunately for the artists, color photography was perfected in the late 1930s and replaced fine artworks in booklets. Artists continued to make posters for the railroads but they were mostly commercial rather than fine art.

The booklet came with this insert showing lodging prices, golf course fees, and eight different motor trips. Jasper Lodge also charged 25¢ per person (about US$4 in today’s money) to swim in the heated pool, which is a surprise, and 50¢ an hour to rent row boats and canoes.

With this booklet, I now have posted 28 annual booklets about Jasper Park Lodge issued by CN between 1922 and 1958. Since I doubt any booklets were published in 1943 through 1945, I’m missing only 1923, 1931, 1933, 1935, 1936, and 1949. Those who are interested can download the 1931 and 1936 editions from the Parks Canada History web site, which also has a black-and-white flip book version of the 1923 booklet.

Most of CN’s Jasper booklets I’ve found dated later than 1958 are just rate guides, though I do have this small booklet from 1964. Parks Canada also has a small brochure from 1971 or 1972.
