Jasper Lodge Rates in 1959

Most of Canadian National’s Jasper Lodge booklets, such as the one presented here a couple of days ago, are in two parts: the first half is mainly photos while the second half is mainly a list of Jasper Park activities and the rates for many of those activities. This booklet is, in essence, the second half only: basic room rates as well as rates for sightseeing motor drives, golf, outfitters, chalets, saddle trips, and more.

As such, the entire booklet has only three black-and-white photos. In addition to the cover, the inside front cover shows a woman painting Mount Edith Cavell from Cavell lake, while the back cover shows the Super Continental passing near Jasper Park. The inside back cover is blank, which was a missed opportunity for more photos.

The back cover photo is similar to the photo on the cover of this 1958 booklet, but was taken from a higher angle. Both have the same locomotive in the photo so both were probably taken on the same day. The 1958 booklet photo (which was also used on CN’s summer 1958 timetable) appears to be heavily retouched: the steep mountains in the background don’t look anything like the low hills in the photo on this booklet. CN’s winter 1965 timetable has a photo taken at the same location and the hills in that photo look more like the ones on this booklet than the ones on the 1958 booklet and timetable.

Looking back, I’ve now posted Jasper Park booklets for 1927 and every year from 1938 through 1958 except for 1943-45 (when CN didn’t publish such booklets) and 1949. CN also published booklets titled “Jasper Park Lodge,” sometimes in the same years it published booklets about the park, and I have such booklets for 1924, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1930, 1932, and 1964. In 1927, at least, these overlapped one another as the park book also discussed the lodge while the lodge book also discussed the park.

I also have a 1925 booklet about “Jasper National Park and the Triangle Route” and a 1929 booklet titled “Jasper and the Canadian Rockies.” These two titles were merged and I have booklets from 1930, 1933, 1940, 1947, 1948, and 1949 with variations on the title “Jasper, the Canadian Rockies, and the Triangle Route.”

If that’s not confusing enough, CN also published a series called “The Jasper Way,” for which I have 1950 and 1951 editions and archive.org has posted one from 1956. These were along-the-way booklets describing the routes from Edmonton to Prince Rupert and Edmonton to Vancouver.

Finally, CN published brochures about Jasper, which I have posted for 1946, 1956, 1960, and 1963. All of these can be found on the Canadian National “Other” PDFs page.
