Like yesterday’s breakfast menus, these two have identical lunch menus dated March, 1959, while the cover photos are ones we’ve seen before. First is the rose garden in Portland’s Washington Park, which we’ve previously seen on a 1959 breakfast menu and a 1960 dinner menu.
Both lunch menus offer tuna salad, bacon & tomato sandwich, omelet with ham and green peppers, fruit salad, and chef’s salad. Each run of the City of Portland served two dinners but only one lunch, so there was no need for UP to have two different lunch menus in the same period.
The second menu shows the Domeliner City of Portland in the Columbia River Gorge, which we saw just a few days ago on a 1957 breakfast menu. I’m still somewhat amazed that UP put one of its trains on the cover of these otherwise fairly non-commercial menus, but it is a beautiful image that whoever designed the menus may have found irresistible.
