The illustration on this menu cover shows a Burlington E5 locomotive lettered “California Zephyr” pulling a train through Colorado’s Gore Canyon. Of course, no locomotives were ever lettered for the California Zephyr and Burlington locomotives are not likely to have ever led the CZ on Rio Grande tracks through Gore Canyon. Note that the pale green graphics show Chicago at upper left and the Bay Bridge at lower right.

The unrealistic nature of the image suggests that this illustration was made before the California Zephyr was actually put into service. I think I’ve seen it on some early menus. This unpriced menu offered Elex Club members a choice of baked walleyed pike, fried chicken, or roast beef. The dinner came with soup or fruit cocktail, potatoes and cauliflower, and a salad. For dessert there was a choice of a chocolate sundae, cherry pie, cantaloupe, and cream cheese with guava jelly (presumably on crackers or bread).
