Cape Breton Island Menu

Although Cape Breton is an island, it is less than a mile from the mainland and connected with it by a rock-filled causeway. In Cape Breton, says the back of this menu, “most of the voices are Scotch, many of them speaking Gaelic.” According to Wikipedia, about 2,000 Gaelic speakers remain on Cape Breton, which is more than anywhere else outside of Scotland itself.

This a la carte menu is identical to yesterday’s, except it doesn’t have any markings indicating what meals were eaten or on what train. The menu offers fish, a lot of egg dishes, a few salads (including lobster salad), and a few sandwiches. The lobster salad was $1.15, up from 50¢ in 1946, which is a 55 percent jump even after considering inflation.
