CN 1948 Alaska Menu

Here’s another in the series of CN Alaska steamship menus. Like the other two that have been presented here, it has an Alaska scene on the front and a Jasper scene (Stuart Lake) on the back. However, I’ve seen one that had Alaska scenes on both front and back. The front cover on this one shows the same log church that appeared in a full-color painting on a 1956 CN steamship menu.

Since yesterday’s menu was dated 1937, Canadian National managed to use this series for more than a decade. Unlike yesterday’s menu, which was marked for the SS Prince Rupert, this was used on the steamship Prince George. The 1948 date means it was the newer, larger Prince George, as the one that was a sister ship to the Prince Rupert was destroyed in a fire in 1945.

While the 1937 menu had a musical program that was probably performed live, this one lists classical recordings performed by various symphony orchestras and musicians. The meals were similar to the 1937 menu, with entrées of flounder, halibut, mushroom omelette, veal cutlets, sweetbreads, prime rib, and roast turkey.
