Burlington Northern 1987 Calendar

Unlike previous editions, this calendar is spiral bound. The message from the president is now on the outside instead of being tucked inside the cover. By 1987, former marketing Vice-President Darius Gaskins had been promoted to be president and CEO. That’s quite a step up for someone who had never worked for a railroad before becoming marketing VP.

I imagine that BN’s board of directors thought they were bringing in “new blood” and new ideas when they hired Gaskins and his predecessor as president, Drexel. But Santa Fe president Robert Krebs, and later BNSF CEO, Robert Krebs complained that they made some serious mistakes that someone with more railroad experience might have avoided. One of them was leasing the former NP line to Montana Rail Link.

If Ditmeyer had been allowed to finish his work, it would have replaced existing signaling systems, both saving the railroad money and increasing its capacity. Instead, his work came screeching to a halt when Gerald Grinstein — an airline executive with no prior railroad experience before becoming a BN VP — became president in 1989. Grinstein, says Ditmeyer, was driven by a desire to merge with Santa Fe, and shelved the positive train control project, leading to a three-decade delay in implementation of the technology.

Beyond railroad gossip, I should note that more than half the photos in this calendar showed BN trains. Aside from these, the June photo of a loon is particularly exciting. The apparently mandatory photo of the Oregon Coast appears in November. Fortunately, it has a minimal amount of mist.

This is the last BN calendar in my collection. Presumably, BN published a few more in this format before merging with Santa Fe in 1995.
