Milwaukee 1952/1960 Calendar

This calendar is an impossibility. The pad says it is for 1952, but the Milwaukee Road didn’t start handling the “City” trains until late 1955. Milwaukee started using the Flexi-Vans shown in the picture in international service in 1960. In fact, the image is from Milwaukee’s 1960 calendar.

Milwaukee stapled its paper calendar pads to cardboard calendar tops. Someone must have had a calendar top and a calendar pad and stapled them together to get a higher resale value. I suspect a relative gave this to me as a present as I probably would have noticed the discrepancy and refused to buy it if I had found it in a shop. As it was, I didn’t notice until after I scanned it.

The painting is signed Everett McNear. Born in Minneapolis in 1904, he studied at the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Arts, then moved to Chicago where he became heavily involved in the Chicago Art Institute as both a painter and a collector. In addition to his fine-arts paintings, he did illustrations for a variety of companies including International Harvester, Standard Oil of Indiana, and of course the Milwaukee Road. He died in 1984.
