Union Pacific 1947 Calendar

At least nine of the scenic photos in this calendar also found their way onto Union Pacific menus. The November photo showing California orange groves also appears on the January, 1950 calendar.

The opening page, which shows December 1946, is unique in the UP calendar series for the size of its photo. While photos on the standard 12-1/2″x29″ UP calendars were 9-1/2″ tall, the photo of Union Pacific’s headquarters building is almost 5″ taller. Obviously, the company thought it was important to show the entire building including the giant Union Pacific sign on top.

The July photo showing the Grand Canyon and the last page (photo descriptions) photo of Mt. Hood are the only scenic (non-train, non-UP headquarters) photos that I haven’t seen on a menu. They are taken from nearly the same spots as others: the Grand Canyon here and Mt. Hood here — but they aren’t exact matches. The two pairs of photos could have been taken the same day, but I suspect the Mt. Hood photos were a few years apart.
