Western Wonderlands: 1929

Here is the 1929 edition of a booklet we’ve seen before in a 1931 version. This edition has fifteen black-and-white photos and six color lithographs, which are hand-colored versions of black-and-white photos. Technology had changed by 1931, as that edition had seventeen natural color photos and only three black-and-white photos. While the colors in this edition’s lithographs are fairly realistic, when compared with the 1931 photos they look more like paintings than photos.

I didn’t notice when I posted the 1931 edition, but the cover illustration shows Union Pacific’s Grand Canyon Lodge perched on the edge of Bright Angel Point. It was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, who designed other Union Pacific hotels and train stations as well as several other national park buildings. The lodge burned in 1932 and the rebuilt lodge was less spectacular, mainly in not having a second floor observation deck. The design changes were probably made to allow the structure to better withstand heavy winter snowfalls.
