Yellowstone Opens June 20, 1929

Distributed to travel agents for the 1929 vacation season, this four-page brochure features the lovable Yellowstone bears drawn by Walter Oehrle. The image of the bears using a crowbar to break a lock consisting of the Union Pacific shield sends a mixed message, however; it should be a key with the Union Pacific logo unlocking the entrance to the park.

Inside is a pre-Willmarth map of Union Pacific West, with tiny graphics depicting all the cities and parks reached by UP trains. The graphic for Minneapolis–which UP reached only indirectly via C&NW–shows Great Northern’s Stone Arch Bridge. A “travel library [that] will help you sell more tickets to the West” shown on the back cover includes a variety of UP tour guides, most of which have previously been shown here.
