Random Travel Menus

Though used on Southern Pacific trains, these menus were based on Union Pacific designs. These particular menus were printed for tours offered by a company called Random Travel.

These menus, whose photos don’t wrap around to the back cover, were apparently designed when the UP introduced its dome diners. A 1960 menu similar to the one above is a table d’hôte-only menu for the City of Los Angeles. But Southern Pacific used them too on the City of San Francisco even though that train didn’t have a dome diner: we’ve seen both the above and below menu covers used on a coffee shop dinner menu in 1961.

These two menus were apparently used on two different 1961 tours, one called “Fall Foliage” and the other called “Autumn Leaves.” The former, Bay Bridge menu has both a full table d’hôte and a la carte sides with prices. The latter, Fisherman’s Wharf menu has an unpriced (meaning pre-paid) table d’hôte menu. Curiously, on the side that the domeliner table d’hôte-only menu advertises a “Special Steak Dinner,” this menu includes those words faintly printed. But there is no steak dinner offered; the closest is prime ribs.
