UP 1930s Advertising Postcards

Union Pacific issued lots of postcards, and I’ll be presenting nearly six dozen of them over fourteen (not necessarily consecutive) days. Today, we’ll look at a few cards overtly advertising UP trains and routes.

In 1935, Union Pacific’s first streamliner, the M-10000, was put into service between Kansas City and Salina, Kansas and given the name City of Salina. As shown on this postcard, and confirmed by the 1937 timetable, the train made two trips per day: first from Salina to Kansas City, then a quick round trip between Kansas City and Topeka, then back to Salina. While this postcard shows the final trip leaving KC at 4 pm, by 1937 this had been changed to 5 pm.

UP Post-Amtrak Menus

After turning passenger service over to Amtrak, most railroads continued to print fancy menus for board of directors meetings and other special trains. Here are two Union Pacific menus from the 1970s.

The first menu was used during Spokane’s Expo ’74. To make room for that fair, and to improve both rail and highway flows through the city, UP and BN cooperated with the city of Spokane to reroute rail lines in the city. The former Great Northern station on Havermale Island in the Spokane River was torn down (except for the clock tower) and all GN and UP tracks through the center of town were moved. Only the former NP station remains today. The cover of this menu is the same, only in black-and-yellow, as was used on a special 1971 menu.

UP Rabbit Dinner Menu

If Union Pacific put bears on its breakfast menu and Kaibab squirrels on its lunch menus, this menu suggests that it put rabbits on its dinner menus. Although this menu is marked “dinner” and yesterday’s was marked “lunch,” the actual items offered and the prices for the items on the two menus are all identical.

The menu side of the bear menu is illustrated with scenes from Goldilocks and the Three Bears, while this one is illustrated with what appears to be a more generic Mother Goose-style rabbit. In contrast, the Kaibab squirrel used on the lunch menu was based on an actual, rare squirrel found on the north rim of the Grand Canyon where UP owned a hotel.

We’ve seen a squirrel lunch menu before dated 1957. This one is undated, but (unlike the 1957 version) uses the UP Overland Route logo, so must be from the 1930s.

Both menus are for lunch just as both of the bear children’s menus are for breakfast, suggesting that UP kept that pattern consistently (and used a different cover, which we will see tomorrow, for children’s dinner menus). The prices on this menu are 40¢, 50¢, and 65¢ for meals, and 15¢ to 45¢ for various a la carte items, making them comparable to yesterday’s menu.

Bear Breakfast Menus

We’ve seen the cover of this children’s menu before, and on the PDF page I dated that one to 1933. I based that date on the Union Pacific’s web page saying that it last used the “Overland Route” logo in 1933, but it is possible that it continued using it on menus for a few years more. Update: An alternative reading of the UP web site suggests it continued to use the Overland logo through 1942, so I would date this menu to the early 1940s.

This menu appears to be older than the previous one, as it has lower prices. The previous menu had breakfasts for 40¢, 60¢, 75¢, and $1, while this one has breakfasts for 40¢, 50¢, and 55¢. The 40¢ breakfasts are roughly comparable, but the 55¢ breakfast on this one is comparable to the $1 breakfast on the previous one. Unlike the previous bear menu, the current one doesn’t offer pancakes, waffles, or French toast, but it does have an a la carte section that includes fruit, juices, cereal, or an egg, all for 15¢ each. If the previous menu is truly from 1933, this one must be from the 1920s.

Missing Menus, 2016

Last September, I posted the covers of nine Union Pacific color wrap-around menus that I knew to be missing from my collection. Except for Boy’s Town, I’ve since added all of those missing menus to my collection and posted them over the last several weeks. However, I’ve also documented several new missing menus. Most of the ones below are from the California State Railroad Museum and the images are used here with permission.

The Municipal University of Omaha is now known as the University of Nebraska Omaha. Since we’ve already seen the University of Nebraska Lincoln, that’s probably all of the Nebraska college menus. None of the college menus in the California museum collection are dated, but all the menus we’ve seen in this series are from 1949 to 1952.

Buffalo Hunt 1971 Dinner Menu

Although Union Pacific “rebooted” its color wrap-around menu series with new photographs in 1970, it continued to use the Howard Fogg centennial menus. This menu is dated April, 1971, the last month before Amtrak took over. Although Fogg did sixteen paintings for UP’s Golden Spike centennial, I’ve only seen six of them on its dinner menus: the Last Spike, the Missouri River bridge, the Columbia River, container trains, a domeliner, and this one, the buffalo hunt.

Sunrise on a Domeliner 1970 Dinner Menu

The menu was used on a Pacific Railroad Society excursion to Yellowstone Park. Prepaid meals featured trout, lamb chops, and veal parmigiana. The sirloin steak is absent as the group evidently decided not to pay extra for that option, which (as this menu shows) cost about 30 percent more than the other meals.

We’ve seen the cover before in a 1965 lunch menu, but today’s dinner menu was used on the City of Portland in 1969. It offers boneless trout, chicken pie, roast beef, and of course sirloin steak.

Coit Tower 1967 Dinner Menu

This menu features two San Francisco landmarks, Fisherman’s Wharf and Coit Tower, in one photo. The menu is marked for the City of Portland, which is unusual because nearly all menus with pictures of San Francisco were used on the City of San Francisco or San Francisco Overland Limited.
