Burlington Escorted Tours 1929

This 68-page booklet describes more than twenty tours to national parks and cities in the West. Starting from Chicago, tours range from nine-day tours to Yellowstone costing (with a lower berth) about $160 (about $1,800 in today’s money) to 28-day tours to Glacier Park, Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco, Yosemite, Los Angeles, San Diego, the Grand Canyon, and Taos costing $477 (more than $5,100 in today’s money). The booklet also includes slightly different prices for people starting in St. Louis.

The first fifteen tours stay almost exclusively on Burlington, GN, and NP rails, while later tours also rely on Southern Pacific, Santa Fe, Rio Grande, Western Pacific, and Alaska railroads. The booklet is illustrated by twenty beautiful, if somewhat unrealistic, hand-colored photos of Glacier, Yellowstone, and other national parks accessible from Burlington, GN, and NP routes.

For people not starting in Chicago or St. Louis, this four-page insert provides prices for the first fourteen tours including rail fares from nearly two dozen cities east of Chicago, as well as prices for people starting the tours from eight cities west of Chicago. The main booklet notes that Burlington had separate booklets with more details on tours to California, Alaska, and the Pacific Northwest–all the tours for which the insert does not have separate prices.
