NP’s postcard of the Columbia River Gorge was taken from the same spot as, but several decades later than, the Union Pacific postcard presented here a few weeks ago. The two-lane highway visible on the cover of the 1959 UP travel booklet is also discernible in the postcard, which (with the reference to vista-domes on the back) dates it to the late 1950s or early 1960s.
The road was expanded to four lanes in the 1960s. As the photo below shows, the gorge is as beautiful today as ever. From Chanticleer, the four-lane highway is partly obscured by trees so hardly detracts from the scene at all.
