Burlington Memo Timetables: K-City to Omaha

Burlington published these smaller-than-postcard sized timetables in the 1960s. The tables show that the railroad operated three trains a day over the 195 miles between Kansas City and Omaha. Some of those trains connected with other trains to Lincoln.

In 1963, the one-way fare from Kansas City to Omaha was $6.07 — nearly $60 in today’s money. A seat in the parlor car was an additional $1.85 or close to $20 in today’s money.

In 1964, the morning train to Omaha left an hour later than in 1963. The schedules of the trains from Omaha to Kansas City were unchanged, as were the fares.

In 1967, the morning Kansas City-Omaha train was back to the same schedule as in 1963. Fares were still the same despite significant inflation — $6.07 in 1963 was almost $7.00 in 1967 dollars. However, the timetables also offered “special weekend round-trip coach fares” which had increased from $6.50 to $7.00 for a Kansas City-Omaha trip. Considering the normal round-trip fare was $10.95, that was still a bargain.
