Alaska Cruises Under the Midnight Sun

This brochure is similar to yesterday’s, but it advertises a “completely air conditioned” North Coast Limited. That dates it to at least 1935. Like yesterday’s, this booklet is courtesy of NPRHA — Lorenz Schrenk collection.

These Alaska brochures describe several cruises and tours, including the Inside Passage, Copper River-Keystone Canyon, Prince William Sound, Golden Belt Line, and Yukon River Circle. Several of the tour prices are higher than in yesterday’s but lower than in Great Northern’s 1936 brochure. So I’m dating this to 1935.

Prices of an eleven-day Inside Passage cruise to Skagway began at $85, or about $1,800 in today’s money. A 23-day Yukon Circle tour — Seattle to Skagway by steamship, Skagway to White Horse by rail, White Horse to Nenana/Fairbanks by river boat, Fairbanks to Seward by rail, and Seward back to Seattle by steamship — cost $311.70, or about $6,600 in today’s money, “exclusive of hotels and meals ashore.” The same trip in the reverse direction must have been quite a bit more as the riverboats required an additional 12 days to force their way up the Yukon River to White Horse.
