Ol’ Man River

This menu is a little smaller and printed on lower-grade paper than the menus of the last two days. It was used on a special train for the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks on their way to their national convention in Los Angeles. Apparently, they decided to go via the Pacific Northwest as this particular dinner menu, dated July 3, was used while en route between Chicago and St. Paul.

Though the menu says the Los Angeles convention would take place on July 12-16, it doesn’t say the year. The Elks held several conventions in Los Angeles over the years. However, the dates narrow this one down to the 1936 convention.

The back cover of this menu is completely blank. The lower quality of the paper compared with yesterday’s suggests that this particular menu was used only for special tour groups and not for diners on regularly scheduled trains.
