Union Pacific ran a mix of streamlined and heavyweight trains in 1950 as indicated by its timetable covers, which showed a bulbous-nosed streamliner next to a steam-powered train whose cars appear streamlined but are evidently made to represent heavyweights. The timetable also included a train called the National Parks Special. However, it appears this was Chicago & North Western trains 85 & 86 between Chicago and Omaha, where the cars were compiled from or mixed into other trains from or to various western destinations including, in the summer, Yellowstone.

In 1950, most of UP streamliner trains operated intact from Chicago to the West Coast. The exception was the City of St. Louis, which went only as far as Cheyenne, where its cars to LA were mixed into the Utahan while cars to Oakland were mixed into the San Francisco Overland. Heavyweight trains, however, were broken up at several places, notably Cheyenne, Green River, Ogden, Pocatello, and other cities. This was one reason why heavyweight trains required longer schedules than the streamliners; they might have gone just as fast between stops but they made more stops and took more time at many of the stops than the lightweights.
