Whoever collected these menus missed a couple of days, or perhaps they got separated, as this menu is dated July 29, 1940 while yesterday’s is dated July 26. The lunch menu has the usual mix of nine entrées: an egg dish, fish, lamb, chicken, beef, and so forth. I am sure some appreciated the fresh shrimp and lobster salad.

The Jasper golf course, now run (along with Jasper Lodge) by Canadian Pacific spin-off Fairmont, is considered by some to be the finest golf course and fifth-best in Canada. Banff is number 2 in Alberta, number 6 nationwide. I don’t know whether those ratings prevailed in 1940, but both courses had been designed by Canada’s most famous golf architect, Stanley Thompson. Since he did Jasper in 1925 and redesigned Banff in 1927, he probably tried to outdo himself, but since Banff already existed, he was likely constrained by the work done by its previous designers.
