Canadian Pacific Hotels in 1957

This 36-page booklet lovingly describes the 17 Canadian hotels and lodges owned by Canadian Pacific in 1957, plus two tea houses. It courteously adds five Rocky Mountain resorts “owned by other organizations but working closely with Canadian Pacific.”

Nearly all of these facilities still exist, though some are quite a bit more expensive than they were in 1957. For example, the booklet says that a room in the non-CP-owned Lake O’Hara Lodge was $10 for one person (US$70 in today’s dollars), $18 for two (US$126). Today the same room with a shared bath is $535 for a single (US$405), $730 for two (US$522). Unlike in 1957, the 2019 price includes round-trip bus fare from the nearest public highway, whereas in 1957 you had to hike in or rent a horse at Lake Louise.

The Canadian Pacific-owned hotels, of course, were all located near train stations or required a short bus ride from the station. The exceptions were the two tea houses, which were 2-1/2 and 4 miles from Lake Louise. While the tea houses mainly existed to serve lunch and snacks, they also had a few guest cottages, though they may not have accepted guests by 1957.
