Santa Fe Traveler for 1951

The Santa Fe Traveler continued into its second year starting with this issue. Like volume 1, number 1, this one is edited by Penrose Scull, but instead of being published by the Traveler Publishing Co. of Chicago, this one claims its publisher is Cross Country Press of New York City. Scull must have decided to move and took the magazine, but not the company name, with him.

While the previous issue said it would be published twice a year, this one says four times, suggesting that it attracted enough advertising to pay most or all of its costs. This issue certainly has a lot more ads than the previous one, which must have eaten into the content as the page count is the same and the pages are actually a little smaller — about 8-1/4×10-3/4 compared to the inaugural issue’s 8-3/4×11-1/2.

Normally, readers would expect the content of a periodical to change from issue to issue, but much of this issue is a repeat of the first one. Most importantly, a lengthy section covering California is reprinted almost word-for-word. While most of the rest of the text is new, it is illustrated by the same photos that were found in the first issue.

The California articles are the only ones attributed to specific writers. One, just called “California” in this issue, is by a writer named James Felton. The other, called “Where to Go, What to See in California” is by Eleanor LaVove. While Felton is credited in both issues, LaVove doesn’t get a credit in this issue.

Searching around, I found that LaVove was a fashion editor who later started a doll museum in Santa Monica. She was probably responsible for the two-page fashion spread in the first issue. The only James Felton I could find was a still-living comedian, who has so many internet references that he overwhelms a writer from 70 years ago.

The inside back cover has a color photo of a natural bridge, probably somewhere in New Mexico, with a caption reading, “The color separation negatives of this beautiful transparency were produced on the Springdale Electronic Color Scanner, owned by Printing Developments, Inc. The four pages of the cover were printed by the offset method from the Springdale ‘Lithure’ copper and chromium plate. These are new graphic arts processes developed in the Springdale Research Laboratory of Time, Inc., publishers of TIME, LIFE and FORTUNE.” I guess four-color printing was still new enough to rate such a description.

The back cover has a painting of a Santa Fe freight train crossing a high bridge that is signed Frederick Blakeslee. Blakeslee was probably best known for his paintings of airplane battles, but he also painted more than 50 cover pictures for the pulp Railroad magazine. The painting on the back of this Santa Fe Traveler had previously appeared on the December, 1948 issue.
