Someone rode the Princess Marguerite (second of her name) in the Seattle-Victoria-Vancouver triangle on August 13, 1952 and collected this menu as a souvenir. Although the menu calls this a “palatial new” ship, it was actually four years old at the time.

The cover shows a steamship that is possibly the Princess Marguerite operating somewhere along the B.C. coast. Above the ship is a Lockeed Model 18 Lodestar, a competitor of the DC-3. Canadian Pacific acquired two of these planes when it bought Yukon Southern Air Transport. Even in 1952 it was not the most modern of planes so it is surprising that CP would feature it on the cover of a 1952 menu.
Only slightly less surprising is the Royal Train that is shown at the bottom of the cover. This train, a mixture of CP and CN passenger cars, was used by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during their tour of Canada in 1939. King George was something of a railfan and often rode in the cab of the locomotive. He was so impressed by CP’s 4-6-4 Hudson locomotive 2850, which pulled the train 3,224 miles, that he allowed CP to designate all of the locomotives of its class as “Royal Hudsons.”

Canadian Pacific was justifiably proud of that, but by 1952, the railroad had Dieselized its main passenger trains and steam locomotives were old news. Since King George died early in 1952, using the image on the cover might even have been in poor taste. The use of an older plane and an older train suggests that the cover was designed in 1948, when the Marguerite really was new, and was still being used in 1952.
The image of the Royal Train on the cover of this menu is based on a photograph of the train that was used on the cover of a 1939 menu that is in the Hayden Mathews menu collection at Johnson & Wales University. The three dozen menus in this collection date from the 1930s to the early 1950s.
The back cover has a map showing the route of CP steamships between Seattle and Alaska. Some of the stops are very small, including Zeballos, whose population today is 107; Anyox, currently a ghost town and pretty much abandoned in 1935; Ocean Falls, today’s population about 50; and Namu, which was a fishing village in the 1950s but today is home to only a few. No doubt for some of these villages Canadian Pacific steamships were the main source of contact with the rest of civilization at the time.
