Canadian National 1927 Jasper Park

This elegant 36-page booklet is illustrated mainly by 31 woodcuts by three different artists: Frank Carmichael, Alfred Joseph Casson, and J.E.H. McDonald. But it also has five watercolors by A.Y. Jackson. The booklet is introduced with four pages of text and most of the woodcuts are accompanied by a paragraph of text, but the watercolors stand on their own.

All of the artists except Casson were founding members of the Group of Seven Canadian artists who believed that “a distinct Canadian art could be developed through direct contact with nature.” The group formed in 1920 and invited Casson to join in 1926. No doubt Canadian National hired artists for this booklet because of their distinct focus on Canadian landscapes.
