Seaboard Coast Line was the result of a merger between direct competitors Seaboard Airline and Atlantic Coast Line that took place in 1967. This menu is therefore after that year; a printer’s code at the bottom left of the inside reads “A-706-M,” which could mean it was printed in June, 1970.

The traditional pose of a Southern Belle wearing a hoop skirt must have been solidified in the public mind by Gone with the Wind. While some may have dressed that way prior to the Civil War, certainly none did in the 1960s or 1970s. Yet hoop skirts frequently popped up in advertising in the same way that men of the West were so often depicted wearing Stetsons. The beautiful bayou in the cover photo is slightly more realistic.

The menu has a lot of options for one issued in 1970, including five full table d’hôte meals, two more plate dinners, and several suggested meals on the a la carte side. Typically, the most expensive meal at $5.65 (about $37 today) is the charcoal grilled sirloin steak, while a shrimp platter is $3.25 (about $21 today) and fried fillet of grouper is $2.25 (about $15 today) on the a la carte side ($1.05 less than the baked grouper on the table d’hôte side). All of these come with potatoes, salad, bread, and beverage, and the shrimp platter also has hush puppies while the steak and baked grouper also come with soup or juice and dessert.
