Union Pacific acquired Missouri Pacific in 1982 and Missouri-Kansas-Texas in 1988, which means it added Arkansas, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas to its service area. Yet you wouldn’t hardly know it from this calendar, which has one photo from Texas but all the rest from states served by the original UP.

The calendar includes two photos each from California, Nebraska, and Oregon and one each from Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Wyoming, and, as already mentioned, Texas. More than half the photos show Union Pacific locomotives or trains, indicating an increased emphasis on advertising the railroad rather than the territory it served. The photos also show the photographers’ names, reflecting the fact that UP had shut down its photo department in 1989 and was now going to outside sources.
