We’ve already seen a colorful 1963 menu celebrating the 80th anniversary of the completion of Northern Pacific’s line from Lake Superior to Puget Sound. The very next year, NP issued this menu celebrating the centennial of the legislation that provided the largest land grant in American history as an incentive to build the railroad. I wonder if anyone commented on the fact that, despite the generous land grant, it took 19 years to complete the project.

This menu is a lot less colorful than the 1963 version but, unlike that one whose inside was blank, this one actually has a North Coast Limited dinner menu on the inside. The table d’hôte side includes five entrées: broiled fish, ham, lamb chops, beef stroganoff, and a 16-ounce sirloin steak. Most of the entrées are under $4 (about $32 today), but the sirloin steak is $5.50 ($44 today). The a la carte side had a lot more variety than many other railroads were offering in 1964. Among the eight entrées were an “NP special vegetable plate,” fried chicken, Welsh rarebit, and a 10-ounce sirloin steak.
