The Owatonna Thunderbolt

The person on this 1926 menu cover was Minnesota’s most famous football star at the time. Herb Joesting grew up in Owatonna, Minnesota, where his high school football performance earned him the nickname “Owatonna Thunderbolt.” He then became a star fullback at the University of Minnesota, setting several records in his junior year, when this menu was issued.

Joesting went on to play both professional basketball and professional football including a year spent with the Chicago Bears. But his lasting legacy was as a college player, including the 1927 season in which the Gophers outscored their opponents by 209 to 51. Joesting was named All-American fullback in both 1926 and 1927.
