Union Pacific 1968 Calendar

Union Pacific redesigned its calendar in 1968, giving the name of the railroad and its logo much more prominence; replacing sans serif typefaces with more modern-looking sans serif typefaces; and deemphasizing the previous- and next-month calendars at the bottom of each monthly page, partly by printing them in grey.

The opening photo makes it clear that UP still used the dome diners on the City of Portland and City of Los Angeles, though I am not sure that either of these trains ever passed mountains like the ones that have been photoshopped behind the windows. The last page shows a dome coach with a little bit more likely background scene.

Only a few other photos (not counting the dome car interiors) are what I would call clichés, that is, photos of scenes repeatedly used in the 1950s calendars. These include Laguna Beach with flowers in the foreground, and perhaps the Grand Canyon and Mount Rainier photos. Several other calendars have Old Faithful and Riverside geysers; this is the only one showing Castle Geyser.

In addition to Laguna Beach, there are two other coastal scenes showing Monterey Harbor and Oregon’s Bandon Beach. I’m very familiar with the area where the Bandon Beach photo was taken as I live just a few steps away; it would be difficult to take an identical photo today as someone has built a hotel at that location.

Other scenes new to this calendar include the Mummy Range in Rocky Mountain National Park (the 1962 calendar photo of the Mummy Range looked completely different); Idaho’s Lake Coeur d’Alene; a natural arch in Escalante Canyon; Cottonwood Wash in Utah; and Idaho’s Redfish Creek in winter. A freight photo shows the Vincent Thomas Bridge over Los Angeles’ harbor in the background.
