Four photos in the 1956 calendar were also used on menus, and one of those — the December photo of Sun Valley skiers — was repeated on the December 1959 calendar. Some of the photos are trite: Dream Lake, the Sun Valley Opera House, Hoover Dam, Sun Valley skiers, and the Mormon Temple. But others offer new views: Los Angeles city hall with the Union Station patio in the foreground; Mt. Carmel Highway in Zion Park; a view of the Tetons with their shapes mimicked by aspen trees in the foreground; and Wyoming’s Snowy Range.

Union Pacific’s 16-page calendars were really printed on four sheets, but I’ve departed from my usual practice of presenting pieces exactly as they are. Instead, I’ve presented them in roughly calendric order. But they can be rearranged to be like the originals as follows:
- Sheet 1 consists of December of the previous year opposite the photo descriptions page back to back with the current year full calendar opposite the full calendar for the following year;
- Sheet 2 consists of January opposite July back to back with December opposite June;
- Sheet 3 consists of February opposite August back to back with November opposite May;
- Sheet 4 consists of March opposite September back to back with October opposite April.
When laid out as a book, the calendar goes December of previous year, full year, January, December, February, November, March, October, April, September, May, August, June, July, next full year, photo descriptions. Anyone who cares can download the 1956 calendar laid out in this order. The pages are necessarily rotated 90 degrees because Adobe has not designed PDFs to do vertical books.
