Rock Island 1964 Timetable

Just like the 1957 timetable, this one has 20 pages with its red cover on the back. But there are a lot fewer trains in this edition.

  • Train 1 now went from Chicago to Rock Island and had no counterpart in the other direction (meaning its cars were tacked onto some other train, probably train 6, to go back to Chicago);
  • Trains 3 & 4 were still the Golden State;
  • Train numbers 5 & 6 were back, applied to the Chicago-Des Moines Des Moines Rocket;
  • Trains 7 & 8 were still the Rocky Mountain Rocket;
  • Trains 9 & 10, the Corn Belt Rocket, continued to connect Omaha with Chicago;
  • The Peoria Rockets were now numbered 11, 12, 13, & 14, and no longer used the “Jet Rocket” super-lightweight equipment;
  • Trains 15 & 16 (renumbered from 16 & 17 in 1957) still connected Minneapolis with Kansas City but were no longer called the Short Line Express;
  • The Twin Star Rocket was renumbered 17 & 18;
  • The Minneapolis-St. Louis Zephyr Rocket had lost the name and been renumbered 19-190 & 201-20;
  • The Memphis-Tucumcari Cherokee, formerly numbered 14 & 15, had lost its name and been renumbered 21 & 22–it still meets Southern Pacific train 39 & 40, no longer called the Imperial, in Tucumcari;
  • Rock Island’s own 39 & 40 still met SP’s train at Tucumcari but only went as far east as Kansas City;
  • Finally, the RDC Choctaw Rockette continued to connect Memphis and Amarillo as trains 21 & 22 but no longer used the name.

Rock Island 1957 Timetable

A reader named Bruce Adams sent scans of some of the items in his collection for us, including this timetable for the Rock Island. Like the 1938 timetable, this one has a bright red cover (which, like the 1938 edition, is really on the back cover). The 1957 edition has only 20 pages, as opposed to 36 in 1938, but many of the trains in the two timetables are similar or have been streamlined in the intervening years.

Rock Island 1938 Timetable

Ranging from Chicago to Denver and from the Twin Cities to Galveston, the Rock Island Railroad had an extensive network of Midwestern rail lines. The equipment pages of this timetable list 18 named trains and at least a dozen more trains important enough to deserve descriptions, though admittedly a couple are just motorcars.

Railroads usually numbered their most important trains 1 & 2, but the Golden State Limited was numbered 3 & 4 so that it could have the same numbers on both the Rock Island and Southern Pacific (which reserved 1 & 2 for the Sunset Limited). Rock Island applied numbers 1 & 2 to an insignificant train between Kansas City and Rock Island, Illinois.

The Jet Rocket Visits Gary

Gary, Indiana is a steel town, having been created in 1906 by the United States Steel Corportation and named after that company’s chairman, Elbert Gary. So when the city celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1956, what better way for the Rock Island Railroad to honor the occasion than to send its latest train, the Jet Rocket?

This little brochure, which was handed out to Gary residents who visited the train, advertised that the train cars offered “more seats: 84-96 seats per 3-unit coach.” I’m not sure telling people that you are going to cram more of them into a train is really the best advertising.

After Amtrak had taken over most American passenger trains, leaving the Southern Railway to operate the only private overnight train in America, the Southern’s menus, some of which I posted here a few months ago, offered passengers the opportunity to spend $3.50 on a print of the Crescent Limited in the age of steam. Andrews Geyser

In the early 1880s, 120 construction workers (many of them prisoners provided by the state of North Carolina as a subsidy to rail construction) lost their lives build a railroad from Old Fort to Asheville, North Carolina. As a memorial to these men and also as a tourist attraction for the Round Knob Hotel, the Southern Railway erected a fountain that continuously sprayed water at least 80 feet into the air.

As shown in the photo below, the Round Knob Hotel was right next to the railroad tracks (which must have been noisy) and just a short walk from the fountain. The fountain itself was fed by a dam two miles and 500 feet in elevation higher than the fountain.

The Hiwassee Loop

In 1874, the Marietta and North Georgia Railway began constructing a line that would eventually connect Atlanta with Knoxville. By the time the route was completed in 1897, the railroad was known as the Atlanta, Knoxville and Northern Railway. However, one weakness in the route was a set of switchbacks just north of the Georgia-Tennessee border.

In 1898, the railroad replaced these switchbacks with a double loop around a hill called Bald Mountain. In 1902, the Louisville and Nashville bought the railroad, and eventually issued this postcard. Though abandoned for freight service in 2001, the Tennessee Valley Railroad operates tourist trains over the loop.

Streamliner Postcards

Chicago & North Western fully streamlined its 400 in 1939, but the postmark on this postcard showing the train crossing the Mississippi on the Stone Arch Bridge is dated 1949. The bridge itself was built by the Great Northern Railway, but obviously other railroads used it.

This picture of the Olympian Hiawatha being pulled by an Erie-built Diesel probably dates from 1947, when the train began operating.
